William Owens Deed – 1683
To all and Whereas and
Now Know you that I
the said Nicholas Spencer, the presidente (Governor and Capt. General of
Virginia), Doe with the Consent of the Councell of State accordingly give
and grant unto William Owens four hundred thirty & four acres of land
lying at the head of Julyans Creeke (Julian’s Creek) on the west side of
the Southern Branch of Elizabeth River in the county of Lower Norfolk,
beginning at a pine standing in a pocosin (wooded swampland) Nash and
Taylor’s corner marker, and running west into the pocosin one hundred
& twenty poles, thence north four hundred forty four poles, thence
again from the said pine and running north on the land of Nash &
Taylor two hundred eight poles to a light wood stump, thence northeast on
Nash and Taylor land ninety poles to a pine, thence east south east
seventy five poles to a pine joining to the land he bought of Theodore
Taylor, thence west north west with three quarters northerly three hundred
& eight poles to the end of the first north line of four hundred forty
four poles being three hundred sixty four acres & seventy acres the
remainder is a neck of land on the north side of Julian’s Creek sold by
Richard Taylor to the said Theodore Taylor and from him to the said
William Owens as by deed of sale may appear and is part of a patent
granted Thomas Nash & Richard Taylor dated the sixth of November 1665.
The said three hundred sixty & four acres being due by and for the
transportation of eight persons into this colony whose names are mentioned
under this patent. To have & to hold, yielding, paying, etc. as
provided & dated the twentieth of November sixteen hundred eighty
& three.
